Put your laboratory skills to work in food innovation.
Do you enjoy hands-on laboratory work and producing results that others can rely on? Would you like to apply your scientific skills in a growing food technology business, supporting both ingredient development and an AI project?
MicroLub is a University of Leeds spinout developing protein-based ingredient technologies that help food manufacturers reduce fat while maintaining texture and mouthfeel. We are looking for a Research Support Officer to join our technical team at Nexus, Leeds, helping turn food science into practical applications.
You will prepare samples, carry out laboratory testing and record accurate, traceable results. Working alongside scientific, product development and data colleagues, you will keep day-to-day experimental work moving and contribute high-quality data to MicroLub’s AI project.
· Perform rheological and tribological assays to measure flow and lubrication properties, following established protocols.
· Carry out food analysis using a texture analyser and measurements of water activity, pH and acidity.
· Maintain clear records of materials, methods and results, contribute to project reports and prepare structured experimental datasets.
· Keep equipment, consumables and samples organised and in good working order.
· Contribute to COSHH, standard operating procedures and risk assessments, and support health, safety and data security inductions.
You will have a BSc in Food Science, Chemistry or a related scientific discipline, or equivalent laboratory experience, together with practical experience in a research, industry or teaching laboratory. You will bring:
· A careful, methodical approach to experiments, record keeping and data quality.
· Strong organisation, with the ability to plan your own work, meet deadlines and manage changing priorities.
· Confidence working independently on routine tasks and collaboratively with colleagues from different technical backgrounds.
· Experience in, or enthusiasm to learn, food analysis and oral tribological techniques.
A relevant master’s degree or experience with proteins, colloids, rheology, tribology or research datasets would be an advantage.
This is an opportunity to see how laboratory evidence shapes ingredient innovation in a science-led business. You will develop practical food analysis skills, work across disciplines and contribute to technology designed for real food applications. Training will be provided in relevant laboratory methods.
Interested in bringing your curiosity and practical skills to MicroLub? Submit your CV and a short supporting statement explaining your relevant laboratory experience and interest in the role.
