Salary: £13.87 per hour

Organisation and Project Outline

The Plus Programme, one branch of the Student Success Centre, is designed to support students from under-represented backgrounds to get the most out of their time at Leeds. This support begins from before students arrive, with lots of pre-arrival communication to help set new students up on the best foot. A key part of this is our Transition Month Comms, wherein the Plus Programme introduces itself alongside the other three delivery strands of the Student Success Centre: The Financial Wellbeing Project (support with budgeting and financial security), Academic Success (matching students with coaches for academic support) and Peer Programmes (highlighting the opportunities for peer mentoring around the University).

The key aims of the project for the intern will be to review what was delivered previously and make it as relevant and engaging for new students as possible. There is a huge amount of information that can be offered to students in these communications, which could be overwhelming to some. The project could involve the redesign of content already in place and the generation of new content (such as video or infographic).

Main Duties and Objectives

The key work you will undertake:

  • Read through existing content with fresh eyes and work out what's landing well and what could be better
  • Conduct focus groups or listening rooms with current students to gain further student insight
  • Rethink and reshape content so it feels relevant, clear and not overwhelming for someone brand new to university life
  • Create something new, whether that's infographics, short videos, rewritten copy or something else entirely; you'll have real input into what gets made
  • Represent all four strands of the Student Success Centre to make sure the communications feel joined-up and consistent
  • Contribute to ongoing communications after Transition Month ends to help ensure a coherent and smooth move into our regular newsletters and Instagram posts.

The role is specifically designed to be open, and the areas for focus will be co-created between the successful candidate and their manager. Whilst the team have some broad goals, we want our comms for students to remain student-led, and that means having students design them too.

Benefits and Outcomes

If you are interested in working in comms roles in the future or simply want to gain experience working as part of an office team, you will gain both direct comms experience and soft skills which will be transferable to many roles.

Person Specification - Essential Criteria
  • A current University of Leeds student for the duration of this internship (including postgraduates and those returning from work placement or study abroad years)
  • Comfortable expressing ideas in writing, whether that's a quick email or a longer piece of content
  • Confident asking questions when something isn't clear, and the ability to explain your thinking to others
  • Willing to share ideas, even if you're not sure they're perfect
  • Considerate of others' perspectives, especially when thinking about how students from different backgrounds might experience content differently
  • Comfortable making small decisions about your own work day-to-day, combined with the ability to manage your time and progress with tasks independently once you understand what’s required
  • Interest in Widening Participation
  • Experience in either producing comms for a specific audience (whether infographic, video, text copy or other) or a demonstrable interest in developing your skills in these areas.
