Job Description/Duties

This is a fixed term role from September 2026 to July 2027

The role of the Academic Writing Mentor is to facilitate writing sessions which support learners with their academic writing. These facilitated sessions support students in their academic literacy development. The role of an Academic Writing Mentor is not to teach writing skills or provide specific writing feedback, but to facilitate an active learning space in which attendees can develop their writing skills and provide support and motivate attendees.  Academic Writing Mentors will also have an opportunity to contribute to student engagement with the service by writing/videoing blog posts, sharing tips, contributing to the Library’s social media content and have an opportunity to shadow staff within the Learning Development Team.

Main duties include:

  • Undertaking initial and ongoing training for the role.  
  • Facilitating Writing Space sessions with undergraduates and taught postgraduates as part of the Learning Development Team’s provision.  
  • Working in partnership with the Learning Development Team to understand and maintain awareness of inclusivity, academic writing and peer-support. 
  • Developing and maintaining resources for the Writing Space.
  • Evaluating the Writing Space and providing feedback to Learning Advisors about the needs of students attending the Space.  
  • Undertaking student engagement activities to promote the Writing Space to students.

These duties provide a framework for the role and should not be regarded as a definitive list. Other reasonable duties may be required consistent with the grade of the post.

Qualifications and Skills

Essential:

  • Completion of the first year on an undergraduate degree (or be studying on a masters level programme) at the University of Leeds  
  • A good knowledge and experience of academic writing
  • Good time management skills, and the ability to work independently  
  • Excellent listening and communication skills   
  • Strong interpersonal and team working skills  

Desirable:

  • Previous experience of teaching, tutoring, or mentoring at school or university or convening a small group in a supportive environment Additional information
