About the Role:

We are looking to recruit a team of community organisers who represent the diversity of our student community at York. The principles of community organising are to bring people together in order to address shared concerns and work to improve the experiences of the community. The key aim of York SU’s Community Organising programme this year is to build up our Community Networks, spaces that connect students from marginalised and underrepresented backgrounds.

One of the networks we would like to develop with a Community Organiser is our Students of Colour Network. As such, we’re looking for a dedicated and ambitious student at the University of York who will work with the Student Communities Development Coordinator to build the network. Work will include developing and delivering a programme of listening and community events, supporting student leaders with the administrative set-up of their Network, helping develop the Network’s capacity to represent students, run inclusive community building events, design campaigns, and supporting the Network to run and publicise their activity.

This role will be approximately 10 hours a week. You will be supported by and meet regularly with a full-time member of Union staff. Training will be provided.

You must be a current University of York student. We encourage students from any stage of study, including Postgraduate students at any level, part-time, distance learners and students on foundation year courses.

Working at York SU:

At York SU we know that maintaining a great work life balance also improves our team's wellbeing, productivity and happiness, this is why we offer a range of contract sizes to fit around your studies and home life.

During your contract you will be able to update your availability at the start of their contract, and then over each holiday period (Christmas and Easter) to make sure work still fits around your lectures and studies.

Other benefits include:

  • Staff Discounts within venues

  • Free soft drinks on shift

  • Access to enhanced student discounts (varies term to term)

  • Free entry to official club nights in town

  • Free 'plus one' access to on campus club nights

  • Discounted or Free tickets to York SU organised events (e.g. Viking Raid and Summer Ball).

We’re an inclusive workplace, where everyone is welcome, everyone can be natural, and be the best versions of themselves. Whatever your background, religion, identity, relationship status if you're good at what you do and want to provide the best experience possible for, with and by our students then jump in with your whole self.

York SU is committed to equality of opportunity - we are an organisation who works very hard to ensure we appoint based on merit. We would particularly welcome applications from candidates with disabilities and/or from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds.

As a Disability Confident Employer, we are proud to offer an interview to applicants who meet the minimum criteria for the advertised position.

**It is important to note that there may be occasions where it is not practicable or appropriate to interview all disabled people that meet the minimum criteria for the job. For example: in certain recruitment situations such as high number of applications, seasonal and high-peak times, we may have to limit the overall numbers of interviews offered to both disabled people and non-disabled people.

If you are invited to interview with us we will share our interview questions in advance so you can feel a little more prepared. We’re more interested in hearing about your experiences and ideas than in testing your memory, and so we want you to feel as comfortable as possible.

If you have any further questions about the position, or if you have a requirement for adjustments that would make the application or interview process more accessible, please do not hesitate to contact us on hr@yorksu.org.

Please note that products containing nuts, dairy, gluten and other potential allergies are served within our venues. We however aim to support a nut free environment within our student centre by encouraging staff not to bring nut based products to work.
