The University of Leeds was founded in 1904, but its origins go back to t­he nineteenth century with the founding of the Leeds School of Medicine in 1831 and then the Yorkshire College of Science in 1874. We are one of the largest higher education institutions in the UK. We are a world top 100 university and are renowned globally for the quality of our teaching and research.

Today the University is an independent corporation established by Royal Charter. Its objects, powers and framework of governance are set out in the Charter and its supporting statutes, amendments to which must be approved by the Privy Council.­
